Broken Ground 2010-2012 | Winter Tracks 2016 – present  | England 2017

I think of painting like music composition: colour choice is the timbre and the key, mark-making is the inflection and expression, pattern is rhythm. I have a need to share my experience of the environments I find myself in, and painting seems to me to channel and share those experiences most comprehensively. Experience is abstract, ephemeral and often, in the vastness of the outdoors, ineffable. So my process is fundamentally abstraction (see Metaphor and the Thingness of Things), and yet it never ceases to surprise and delight me when the paintings turn out to look like landscapes.
