Reef

This suite of paintings is the end result of a week of standing waist deep in the same spot in a lagoon on the south coast of Viti Levu sketching on an iPad and juggling an umbrella for shade. There were small fish and striped, snake-like fronds of seaweed tickling my legs. One of the locals told me not to worry about the seaweed. “They are not snakes. The snakes always swim on top of the water”. Great.

These paintings have been worked over in my studio several times until I got them right. Because I gravitate towards complex forest landscapes, I was fascinated by the challenge of a landscape with no land and by the vast, thundering South Pacific seen as the thinnest white line in the distance. Each painting captures one of the many moods that this place had in the course of a day.
