Preparing for an Art Exhibition

There comes a point when you have to stop painting and prepare for exhibition. So, this week I have been mostly:

  1. varnishing
  2. cutting and assembling frames
  3. staining frames
  4. assembling paintings into frames
  5. writing titles on the back of each one
  6. setting up the studio to photograph the paintings
  7. photographing the paintings
  8. seeing there is shine from the lighting angle
  9. changing the lighting angle
  10. re-photographing the paintings
  11. editing the photographs in Affinity Photo (not Photoshop)
  12. making a spreadsheet list of all the paintings
  13. adding materials, dimensions, dates and prices
  14. matching the correct image to the correct title
  15. writing an artist statement
  16. completing an exhibition agreement
  17. and so on…

The exhibition’s not until September but there is promotional material to develop and oil paint to dry.

This sounds like I’m complaining, but I’m not. It’s all part of the art life and, you know, it will get the paintings out of the studio and give me space to… make more paintings.

How do you cope with admin?

  1. Yes Lars – there’s a lot to do , but people won’t see or buy your works if you don’t put them out there
