Landscapes of Belonging

In February I’m starting a painting project that I hope will help me unpack my sense of identity as a migrant to Australia from Scotland.

This year-long project comprises a two-month period of immersive painting and solo wild camping across two landscapes that have shaped my identity: one month in the Scottish Highlands where I grew up; and one month in the Australian outback not far from where I now live. From the work made through slow engagement with these landscapes, I will create a series of paintings that interrogate themes of identity and belonging.

  1. Hi Lars
What an exciting project – and how brave camping in Scotland during winter – not sure if you’re in your right mind 😂 ⛄️
Also what a challenge . I love painting Australia – my favourite subject especially rural & outback. Having arrived here as a 2 yr old I have no memories of Bavaria so no desire to paint there and no yearnings to go there .
Best of luck with it and I look forward to updates as to how it is going and your experiences
    Cheers Kristina

    1. Hi Kristina, I used to winter camp in Scotland but then I was in my 20s so it might be a bit of an “adventure”. It’ll be an interesting project though, and the discomfort may well be part of it!
Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year
